Functional Rhinoplasty

Functional Rhinoplasty
A nose should be as functional as it is beautiful. For many patients, chronic congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, or sleep disturbances are caused by structural abnormalities within the nasal framework. Functional Rhinoplasty is a corrective procedure designed to restore a clear, unobstructed airway. We recognize that the external shape of the nose is often a reflection of its internal health.
Common Causes of Nasal Obstruction
We treat several conditions that can impede airflow:
- Deviated Septum: When the wall between the nostrils is crooked or displaced, blocking one or both sides.
- Nasal Valve Collapse: Weakness, narrowness, or full collapse of the critical areas of the nose responsible for airflow during inhalation.
- Turbinate Hypertrophy: Enlargement of the structures that warm and moisten the air.
- Nasal Trauma: Previous injuries that have altered the internal and external structure of the nose.
The Intersection of Form and Function
While the primary goal of functional surgery is medical, we understand that patients may also wish to address cosmetic concerns. Because we are facial plastic surgeons, we can often perform concurrent Cosmetic Rhinoplasty, which simultaneously refines the external appearance of the nose.
Recovery and the No-Packing Approach
Our patients benefit from our advanced no-packing technique. By eliminating traditional nasal packing and splints, we ensure that our functional patients experience significantly less pressure and discomfort during their initial recovery. Most patients return to work or school within one to two weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will insurance cover my functional rhinoplasty? Functional procedures performed to correct an airway obstruction or repair a trauma-related deformity may or may not be covered by insurance. Our team can help provide the necessary documentation for your carrier.
Does Dr. Goyal pack the nose after airway surgery? No. Even during complex functional and septal work, we avoid the use of nasal packing to ensure a more comfortable and less stressful recovery for our patients.
Will my nose look different after functional surgery? If you are only seeking functional improvement, the external appearance of your nose will generally remain the same. However, if structural support is added to improve breathing, subtle aesthetic refinements may occur. We will discuss expected changes during the initial consultation.
How long is the recovery? Most patients return to work or school within one to two weeks. While there may be some internal swelling and congestion for a few weeks, the improvement in breathing is often noticeable shortly after the first postoperative visits.
