What Types of Moles Should Be Removed Surgically?

1. Suspicious Moles: Suspicious moles are those that show signs of skin cancer. They may have irregular borders, asymmetrical shape, uneven color, and a diameter larger than a pencil eraser. If you have a suspicious mole, Dr. Goyal may remove it surgically and send it for biopsy to determine if there is any cancerous component.
2. Irritated Moles: Moles that come into contact with clothing or jewelry may become irritated and may even bleed. These moles may become infected and should be removed to prevent further complications.
3. Large Moles: Moles that are large and raised may be uncomfortable and may be aesthetically displeasing. They may also increase the risk of skin cancer and should be removed surgically.
4. Changing Moles: Moles that are changing in size, color, or shape should be evaluated by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Dr. Goyal may recommend surgical removal if your mole has any features that are suspicious for cancer.
5. Congenital Moles: Congenital moles are moles that are present at birth. These moles may be large, raised, or have irregular borders. Dr. Goyal may recommend surgical mole removal if you have a congenital mole that is increasing in size or changing in appearance.

What is the Process for a Facial Mole Removal Procedure?

Before your facial mole removal surgery, you will have a consultation with our board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Lindsey Goyal. During this consultation, you will discuss the reason for the surgery, the different options for removal, and any risks associated with the procedure. Dr. Goyal will also examine the mole and determine if it needs to be biopsied or removed entirely. She will take photographs of the mole and discuss the potential scarring that may occur after the procedure.

During your consultation, Dr. Goyal will also review your medications to determine if you need to stop taking certain medications or supplements prior to the surgery. Smoking and alcohol use can prevent proper healing, and Dr. Goyal asks patients to refrain from smoking and alcohol use for a certain period of time before the procedure.
