Otoplasty

Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping)
Prominent or asymmetrical ears can be a significant source of self-consciousness, often lasting well into adulthood. Whether the concern is protruding ears, large earlobes, or an irregular shape due to genetics or prior injury, Otoplasty offers a permanent, transformative solution. The goal of a modern otoplasty is not simply to pin the ears back, but to recreate the natural folds and contours of the ear so they sit in a more unobtrusive proportion and in balance with the rest of the face.
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a specialized surgical procedure designed to change the shape, position, or proportion of the ears. Most commonly, it addresses the antihelical fold (the Y-shaped curve inside the rim) and the conchal bowl (the deep cup of the ear). By utilizing internal, permanent sutures and specialized cartilage-molding techniques, we can:
- Reduce Protrusion: Bring the ears closer to the side of the head.
- Correct Asymmetry: Ensure both ears match in height and angle for a balanced profile.
- Reshape Cartilage: Create the natural, soft folds that define an aesthetically pleasing ear.
What are the Benefits of Otoplasty?
- Restored Confidence: Patients often describe a significant weight lifted once they no longer feel the need to hide their ears behind specific hairstyles or hats.
- Natural, Refined Results: We avoid a plastered-back look by ensuring the rim of the ear remains visible from the front, mimicking a natural anatomical position.
- Permanent Correction: The structural changes made to the cartilage are typically lifelong.
- Minimally Invasive: Incisions are meticulously placed in the natural crease behind the ear, where they are discreetly hidden.
Your Otoplasty Consultation
Our approach to ear surgery is highly individualized. During your consultation, we will perform a detailed evaluation of your facial proportions, analyze the unique folds of each ear to ensure a harmonious result, determine whether prominence is due to excess conchal cartilage, lack of an antihelical fold, or both, and discuss your desired degree of correction.
Recovery: What to Expect
- The Initial Dressing: You will leave surgery with a soft surgical wrap that protects the ears and maintains their new position during the earliest stage of healing.
- The Support Headband: After the initial dressing is removed, you will transition to a supportive headband essential for protecting the ears as the tissues settle.
- Resuming Activities: Most patients return to work within a week. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise or activities where the ears could be bumped or bent for several weeks following the procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will otoplasty affect my hearing? No. Otoplasty only addresses the external, visible portion of the ear. It does not involve the ear canal or the internal structures responsible for hearing.
Are the results permanent? Yes. The specialized sutures used to reshape and secure the cartilage are permanent. The structural transformation is lifelong.
Will the ears look over-pinned? Our surgical philosophy is centered on natural results. We take meticulous care to maintain a natural space behind the ear so that it appears un-operated and in beautiful balance with your facial features.
