Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision Rhinoplasty
A primary rhinoplasty is a life-changing event, but when the initial surgery fails to meet aesthetic or functional expectations, it can be deeply distressing. Revision Rhinoplasty — more accurately known as secondary or tertiary rhinoplasty when performed by a separate surgeon — is a specialized procedure designed to correct issues arising from a previous nasal surgery. We are highly regarded for navigating the complexities of revision cases. Because the nasal anatomy has been previously altered and scar tissue is present, these procedures require a surgeon with profound structural knowledge and a delicate artistic touch.
Why Is Revision Rhinoplasty Performed?
Patients seek our expertise for a variety of reasons following a previous surgery:
- Aesthetic Concerns: An over-resected scooped bridge, a pinched tip, or persistent asymmetry.
- Functional Issues: New or worsened breathing difficulties caused by a loss of structural support (nasal valve collapse).
- Unnatural Appearance: A nose that appears operated on or does not harmonize with the rest of the facial features.
The Complex Nature of Secondary Surgery
Revision surgery often requires the reconstruction of the nasal framework using grafting material, as the original cartilage may have been removed during the first procedure. We are expert in utilizing ear or rib cartilage grafts to rebuild a stable, elegant nasal structure that will stand the test of time.
Your Revision Consultation
We understand the vulnerability patients feel when seeking a second surgery. During your consultation, we provide a compassionate and thorough evaluation: assessing the strength of the remaining nasal cartilage and the health of the internal airway; evaluating the skin envelope to determine the safest and most effective surgical approach; and providing an honest assessment of what can be achieved, prioritizing a result that is safe, functional, and beautiful.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait before having a revision? We generally recommend waiting at least one full year after your primary surgery. It takes 12 months for the initial swelling to resolve and the scar tissue to soften, which is essential for a safe and predictable secondary result.
Where does the grafting cartilage come from? If the septum does not have enough remaining cartilage, we may harvest a small amount of cartilage from the ear or the rib. We will discuss the best source for your specific anatomy during your consultation.
Can breathing be improved during a revision? Yes. Restoring the airway is a primary goal of revision rhinoplasty. We focus on rebuilding the internal aspects of the nose to ensure it functions as well as it looks.
